Campus Ontology - People and Departments

Introduction

The following dashboard is designed to demonstrate the queries (both analytical and transactional) that are now possible as a result of the development of the a linked data source for people and departments within the University of Twente (UT). Concretely, this data source is made up of 6 different datasets from across the UT, including:

Please note, the source data is actually slightly broader and does also include data buildings and departments and their relation to people but a demonstration of this can be found in another dashboard (see: Buildings and Occupancy). This has only been separated for readability reasons but the source data is the same.

The underlying ontology which supports the linking of these data sources can be explored as a live graphical representation here.

The following SPARQL queries serve to show the results for various transactional or analytical questions regarding UT buildings and their occupancy. The underlying question being answered and the exact content of each query is defined below.

Contact Information for a UT Employee

The following query provides results showing the contact information, including email and their office location, for a given employee. Here, a specific name can be input in the search bar at the top of the query and the person you are searching for can be found.

Please note: the search functionality in this interface is sensitive so you need to input an exact name match for the employee to be found. This input is generally based on the first name initials of the employee and their last name in full.

Buildings and UT People

The following query provides results showing all the people that are located within a specific building based on their contact information. Here, a specific building name can be input in the search bar at the top of the query and all persons associated with that building can be found.

Please note: the search functionality in this interface is sensitive so you need to input an exact name match for a building in order for the people to be found.

Departments and People

The following query provides results showing all the people that are associated with a specific department. Here, a specific department name can be input in the search bar at the top and all persons associated with that department can be found.

Please note: the search functionality in this interface is sensitive so you need to input an exact name match for department in order for the people to be found.

Buildings and UT organisations

The following query provides results showing all UT organisations (the combination of department and section) located within a specific building. Here, a specific building name can be input in the search bar at the top of the query and all associated UT organisations within that building will be returned.

Please note: the search functionality in this interface is sensitive so you need to input an exact name match for a building in order for the UT organisation to be found.

People and their Areas of Expertise

The following query allows the user to search for a particular person and see what their areas of expertise are. Here, a specific employee name can be input in the search bar and a list of the area of expertise and more specific expertise interests can be found.

Please note: the search functionality in this interface is sensitive so you need to input an exact name match for the employee to be found. This input is generally based on the first name initials of the employee and their last name in full.

People associated with Specific Sub-Areas of Expertise

On the profile page of each employee at the university, areas of expertise and their sub-areas are listed. At the moment, searching for employees based on some sub-area of expertise is not yet possible but would assist users with, for example, finding people with similar interests to start a collaboration. The following query allows you to fill in a specific sub-area of expertise and return all employees who list it as one of their expertise areas.

Please note: In the linked data source, area of expertise has only been made for a very small group of people to demonstrate the possibilities of including this data. As such, the results are limited but when expanded could prove to be quite interesting.
